When the shoe isn’t doing all the work, the foot has to, and that’s the whole point. Muscles that would otherwise just sit there start actually engaging, and over time that shows up as better balance and stronger feet without anyone having to think about it.

For most of the year, yes, they breathe well enough for warm days and a pair of socks sorts out the cooler ones. Extreme weather is its own thing, but for regular everyday use across seasons they hold up fine.

That’s pretty much exactly what they’re made for. Gravel, climbing frames, wet grass, the kind of surfaces that destroy regular shoes in a term, a well-made barefoot shoe handles all of it without falling apart by week three.

Leave the insoles in. Once they’re out they don’t go back properly, and pulling them changes the fit and feel of the whole shoe in ways that are hard to undo, so it’s just not worth trying.
